about

Alix and I discovered this song whilst singing with some friends on the Summer Solstice of 2019 and loved it so much we have been singing it ever since. It came alive especially one spring morning back in April whilst sat in Alix's garden during lockdown. I really felt deeply connected and inspired when the song came through in this particular way, carried on the beautiful spring morning energy, so fresh and vibrant, and there I really felt the spirit of Oxum... she who this song is for.

Oxum (pronounced Oh-shoom) is an Orixa (Orisha - a deity from the Yoruba tradition of Nigeria) who is revered at the goddess of fresh water. She is also worshipped in Afro-Brazillian culture, which is where this song originally comes from and why it is sung in Brazillian Portuguese. Oxum is also the Orixa of rivers, streams and waterfalls, as well as fertility, love, beauty and prosperity.

I really felt to make this record to celebrate the love Alix and I have for singing together, and to share our prayer to Mamãe Oxum. We pray to Oxum for the healing of the life giving waters, for the freshness of spring time, for the purity and goodness in the innocent hearts of all humanity, to help us clean all of our fears and worries and receive the blessing of new life.

lyrics

Oraiéié Oraiéiéo
Oraiéié Mamãe Oxum, Oxum, Oxum
Oraiéié Mamãe das aguas
Oraiéié Mamãe Oxum
Oraiéié nas cachoeiras
Com suas aguas vem lavar, lavar, lavar
A dor da toda humanidade
Nas correntesas transformar...

English translation:

Oraiéié Oraiéiéo
Oraiéié Mama Oshum, Oshum, Oshum
Oraiéié Mother of the waters
Oraiéié Mama Oshum
Oraiéié the waterfalls
With your waters come wash, wash, wash
All the pains of humanity
Transform in your currents...
