about
This is an arrangement of a traditional Armenian piece called Erzroumi Shoror.
I first heard this song back in 2014 whilst travelling in Cappadocia, Turkey. It made a real impression on me so I decided to learn it. Whilst in Turkey I began wondering about Armenia. At that time I didn't know anything about the terrible history between Turkey and Armenia, all I knew is how moved I was by their traditional Duduk music.
When I got back to England I took it to my good friend James Watts who plays the Duduk (a traditional instrument deeply associated with traditional Armenian folk music) and we made this arrangement together. We wanted to learn more about Armenia and felt a strong calling to travel there...
Then, somehow, literally a week or so later we received an invitation to travel to Armenia to take part in an international music exchange programme called Sounds of Peace! It was funded by the EU commission who were gathering people from a dozen or so countries; and no more than a month later we arrived in Armenia! We could hardly believe it...
Whilst we were there we travelled to some of the countries most beautiful places including Lake Sevan and Geghard Monastary, and celebrated my 31st birthday. Some of the pictures in the video I took while we were there. It is a journey I will never forget.
We recorded this arrangement of Erzroumi Shoror a few years later in January 2017, and now nearly 7 years later I finally share it with you.
